Which power supply fits the design of a vending machine?

When we speak of vending machines people might immediately think of branded soda, coffee and classic candy bar vending machines. But nowadays, they just as often contain healthy foods like vitamin water, power bars, wraps and even fresh salads.

Yet, despite their evolved, and more diverse offering, vending machines still operate in the same way: offering high quality snack products, 24/7, on-demand, through self-service.

This all has to be taking into account, when designing vending machines as an engineer. Using a high quality power supply as the heart of the machine reduces the risk of downtime due to unexpected failures.

High quality power supplies at competitive price

Another important aspect to keep in mind for the design is that vending machines are intended to bring in extra money for the operator. To realize the highest return on investment, the hardware cost must thus be kept low. The ideal power supply solution is therefore of high quality, yet, at a very competitive price. A needle in a haystack? Certainly not.

At Elipse, we can offer the perfect solution for all sorts of vending machine applications. Whether you are looking for a standard power supply or a tailor-made power supply solution, we’re here to help.

High efficiency power supplies

One thing is for sure, efficiency of the power supply is key. A highly efficient switch mode power supply reduces energy losses to a minimum which in turn saves money. Besides, it keeps the vending machine cool(er) which increases both the lifetime of the power supply and the surrounding electronic equipment. Opting for a power supply with high efficiency therefore also means opting for a sustainable solution.

Vending machines have multiple electronics that need to be powered. For instance, the display, control board, sensors for detection or temperature measurement, systems for payments etc.

This means some loads are always-on, like LED lighting for example, but others are in idle mode up until the moment the vending machine is being used. At that moment, in a snack machine for instance, a peak load is drawn to drive a motor for the spiral in one of the trays. Or in a coffee machine, a peak load can be drawn to drive a motor to pump water into a coffee. These functions require a specific power supply solution suitable for the supply of short term peak loads.

Small 120W power supply

The LOF series from Mornsun are a perfect fit for these dynamic load conditions. These power supplies – both very compact, and available with a wide temperature range – are perfect for small vending machines and suitable to operate in different ambient temperatures worldwide.

For instance Mornsun’s LOF120 series, 120W power supplies, can be installed in the system of Class I (with PE) or Class II (without PE), which is suitable for industrial, office and home environments like vending machines, ticketing machines, self-check-in systems and self-service kiosks or payment terminals.
