New 40W DC/DC converter with ultra wide input range of 8:1

New 40W, Ultra Wide input voltage range DC-DC converter from Gaia-Converter simplifies input transient protections. Gaia Converter extends its ultra wide input voltage range DC/DC Converters platform to the new High Rel MGDD-40 series,  targeting Military and Airborne applications.

Uniquely wide, the MGDD-40 Series 9-60V & 80V transient input voltage range is ideal to comply with Mil-Std-1275, 704 or DO-160 standards without additional front end protection device. This unique performance is achieved thanks to Gaia’s proprietary switching techniques while also keeping efficiency over 90%.

With 2 outputs (for parallel, serial or symmetrical operation) of 5V, 12V, 15V and 24V, they can cover a wide variety of needs such as:

  • single 5V to 48V output
  • + & – 15V output
  • 2 x 24V outputs

Packaged in a very low profile 0.33” and 1.5”x1.75” housing, the MGDD-40 Series have a wide temperature range of -55°C to +105°C and are potted to fit rugged Military and Airborne environmental conditions.

There are three different mounting possibilities

  1.Converter stand-alone montage

To calculate the maximum ambient temperature at which the converter can operate, the following formula can be applied Tmax = Tcase – Rth(c) x Pout(1/h – 1)

  2.Converter with chassis mounting

If the thermal interface resistance can be neglected, the maximum chassis temperature is equal to the maximum converter case temperature. Tmax chassis = Tmax.

  3.Converter with heatsink mounting

To calculate the maximum ambient temperature the converter can operate, the following formula can be applied :
Tmax = Tcas – Rth (c) x Pout (1/ŋ – 1)

The most sensitive parameter in this formula is the Rth(tot) value. Rth(tot) depends on the thermal resistance of the converter Rth(c) in the mounting configuration and the thermal resistance of the heatsink Rth(hs).

  • The Rth(c) depends on ambient temperature, the way the converter is tied to the PCB, position,PCB copper track and power plane length. Also, in general Rth(c) decreases as temperature is increases.
  • Rth(hs) : Rth(hs) value is highly depending on how the heatsink is connected to case.

Protections of the MGDD-40 series

The units are full featured and protected with zero to full load regulation, Trim & On/Off capability, adjustable UVLO,  soft start, embedded EMI filter as well as over-current and over-temperature protection. They can also be synchronized and/or paralleled for added power or N+1 redundancy.

Connection of the outputs in parallel

Outputs connected in parallel allow to achieve single output 3,3V, 5V, 12V, 15V or 24V up to 40W power. These values can be extended using trim adjustment.

The MGDD-40 series is a unique piece of technical craftsmanship from Gaïa. With it’s ultra wide input range, different output possibilities and multiple protections it’s a perfect fit and design for rugged applications. Because of this the MGDD-40 series do not use any optocoupler.
